Gail Christine Steward was born on September 9, 1944 in Chicago, Illinois to Wilbert L. Steward and Evelyn Christine (Pannell) Steward. Gail has a younger sister, Colette Aimee. Gail’s parents loved her and Colette dearly; stressing the importance of faith and education from early on.
Gail attended St. Martin de Tours elementary school and Loretto Academy for High School. Gail attended Chicago Teacher’s College, majoring in Education and Art, and was certified to teach K-18. She went on to teach in both public and in Catholic school settings. She later worked in accounting after her teaching career.
Gail married William Edward Spann, Jr. and had two sons, William Edward, III (“Bill”) and Patrick Alexander.
Gail’s faith and her family were the two cornerstones of her life. For years, she was a daily communicant at Church, and she prayed the rosary, her favorite prayer, daily. Gail was very close to her younger sister, Colette as well as her cousin Angela. Some of her favorite memories included taking early morning walks with Colette and cooking in the kitchen with Angela.
She loved dearly and was extremely proud of her two boys, Bill and Patrick. Gail got a chance to see them both grow up into men with careers of their own. Bill’s wife, Cristina, was truly like a daughter to Gail, and gave her a great deal of comfort in her final years. And spending many years watching her five grandchildren play and grow was a blessing that she especially enjoyed. And Gail attended all of their Baptisms, birthdays and First Holy Communions.
Gail was with her son, Bill, during her last hours on earth. She passed away on Sunday, August 3rd, 2025.
Gail is survived by her son, Bill, daughter-in-law Cristina, five grandchildren, younger sister Colette, cousin Angela and many other beloved family members. She is preceded in death by William Edward Spann, Jr. and their son Patrick. Her family prays that we will all be reunited one day.
